Classroom: Life Skills Learning Room Vision: Healthy Kids Mission: A place where students can explore, learn, and practice skills that will enhance their physical, social, and emotional well-being.
Village Model:
School + Family + Community = Healthy Kids!
Environment: Plants, low lighting (no florescent!!), sound system
Each student has an individual plan that is a hybrid of what they (and their families) want to learn/practice and what I want them to learn/practice (standards).
Staffing: Me, college interns (U of M School of Public Health, Health Education). Community Resources - community health workers, police officers, law makers, etc.
Spaces:
Gathering space - carpeted, comfy chairs, no florescent lights
Media Space - 10 computers, health library (books, magazines, brochures, etc) video, still cameras, ipods, mobile lab w/ enough laptops for each student.
Classroom Space - Tables w/comfortable chairs, SmartBoard (and all supportive technology that goes with it.)
Practice Space - small theater space for role plays, skits, presentations, communication skills practice.
Individual/Small Group Meeting Space - place to meet with students or a quite space for a small group to meet.
Real problems - innovative ways to change this.
3rd space - proactive health measures. Center for Thriving.
